Buying Guide: Spider Cranes
What to consider before sourcing a compact tracked (spider) crane.
Spider cranes are compact, tracked lifting machines designed to reach confined or sensitive sites — indoors, on finished floors, in courtyards, or on uneven ground — where a conventional crane cannot go. Because models vary widely, the right choice depends on matching the machine to your actual lifting task and site constraints. This guide outlines the questions and documentation to settle before you commit.
Typical use cases
Match capacity to the real task
- Define the heaviest load and the exact radius (distance) at which it must be lifted — rated capacity falls as the radius increases.
- Ask the supplier for the full load chart, not just the maximum lift figure.
- Consider required lifting height and whether a fly-jib or searcher hook is needed.
Site and access constraints
- Measure the narrowest access point (doorways, gates, lifts) against the machine’s stowed width and height.
- Check floor loading limits for indoor use and ground-bearing pressure under the outriggers.
- Confirm outrigger footprint and whether variable/independent outrigger positioning is required.
Power and operation
- Decide between diesel, electric (mains/battery) or dual-power — electric is often required indoors for emissions and noise.
- Check controls (radio remote vs. fixed), setup time, and operator training requirements.
- Consider serviceability and local availability of spare parts and consumables.
Questions to ask the supplier
- 01What is the certified load chart across the full working range?
- 02What are the stowed dimensions and total weight?
- 03What power options and outrigger configurations are available?
- 04What safety systems are fitted (load moment limiter, outrigger interlocks)?
- 05What warranty, spare parts and after-sales support are offered?
Documentation to request (do not assume — verify)
- Manufacturer load charts and technical data sheet
- CE marking and EU Declaration of Conformity where the machine is to be used in the EU
- Operation and maintenance manuals in a language your team reads
- Test/inspection certificates applicable to the specific unit
This guide is general educational information only. Specifications, capacities and compliance documents differ by model and must be confirmed in writing for the exact unit quoted. VIB Nexus does not state that any machine is compliant or certified until the supporting documents have been received and reviewed.
