Buying Guide: Scissor Lifts

What to consider before sourcing a scissor lift (mobile elevating work platform).

Scissor lifts provide a stable, elevated platform for working at height. The right machine depends on working height, platform size and load, the surface and environment (indoor/outdoor), and the power source. This guide outlines the key decisions and the documents to confirm before purchase.

Height, platform and load

  • Define the required working height (platform height plus a typical reach), not just the maximum platform height.
  • Confirm the platform dimensions and whether an extension deck is needed for your task.
  • Check the safe working load (total and per-person) against the people, tools and materials you will lift.

Environment and surface

  • Choose electric for indoor/clean environments and rough-terrain (diesel/4WD) for uneven outdoor ground.
  • Check gradeability, tyre type (non-marking for indoors) and the machine’s rated wind speed for outdoor use.
  • Confirm overall weight and dimensions against floor limits, doorways and transport.

Safety and serviceability

  • Look for guardrails, emergency lowering, pothole protection and tilt alarms as applicable.
  • Consider battery type and charging (or fuel), duty cycle and maintenance intervals.
  • Confirm spare-parts availability and after-sales support in your region.

Questions to ask the supplier

  • 01What is the exact working height, platform size and safe working load?
  • 02Is the machine rated for indoor, outdoor or rough-terrain use?
  • 03What power source, battery/fuel capacity and duty cycle apply?
  • 04What safety features and certifications are included?
  • 05What warranty, spare parts and service support are offered?

Documentation to request (do not assume — verify)

  • Technical data sheet with verified height, load and dimensions
  • CE marking and EU Declaration of Conformity where used in the EU
  • Operation and maintenance manuals in a language your team reads
  • Inspection/test certificates applicable to the specific unit
